I do not know if this has been discussed but here it is anyways.

I reciently upgraded to the ipad with 64 gig and always connected 3G and I LOVE IT!!!! But..... I love Bonsai Desktop also and really wanted it on my iPad but, of course, that was not going to happen - that is until I purchased an app calles CarbonFin Outliner. It is similar to Bonsai but just not as advanced yet.

The way Carbonfin Outliner syncs with the PC is by creating an account with Carbonfin(free). Next you sign in and then got to the "Outliner Outline" section where you create and save outlines to their website. Once you save an outline all you have to do is start the app on the iPad and hit the sync button and it syns all notes between the iPad and your account.

Now to use Bonsai with Carbonfin is easy even though they both use different file extensions - Bonsai uses .otl file extension and Carbinfin uses .opml file extension. Bonsai can import .opml files but cannot export .opml files. To get around this, all you have to do is go to Carbonfin FAQ page and look for the subject that talks about using Carbonfin with Bonsai. There you will find a littile utility that you place in the Natara/Bonsia folder. This gives Bonsai the ability to export in the .opml file format. After you export any of your Bonsai outlines, go into carbibonfin and import the outlines and hit the save button. Now on the iPad just hit the sync button and your good to go.

This may sound like alot of work but it is not. Once you have a Carbonfin account it will take you about ten minutes to set up everything to use Bonsai with the iPad.

It is great!! I love it!!

Side note: DocsToGo now works really well with the Ipad so you can import all your MS documents including excell. You can even use formulas in excel documents.

Also iSilo now works great with the iPad.

Hope this is of help - Jim Ringgold

All this is very easy except it is not as nice as using Bonsai....

How do you handle priorities and due dates? I didn't see that in Outliner, and CarbonFin hasn't replied to an e-mail asking about it.

Hello Jim and any other readers.

I have now been given an iPad, so I'm trying to find something with Bonsai's features - There's nothing which includes the full feature set. However,

  • I'm playing with iThoughtsHD on the iPad and working out how to synch my files via OPML export and import - The lack of tagging and filtering will be a shame. iThoughts is great for taking notes and is the best mind mapping app for including task-related fields and for import / export options.
  • I was also considering My Life Organized although, for the price, it's a shame that it doesn't even feature a contact field.
  • Carbonfin Outliner just looks too simple to be useful (item title text, notes and checked status). I've downloaded their OPML export template, as a starting point for developing OPML export for iThoughtsHD.
  • Roll-on Bonsai for iPad! That would be a killer App, especially with the choice of cloud or WiFi synch (no iTunes, thanks)... I always live in hope!
