I love Bonsai and I have a ton of things in it. I am a non-techie so I am seeking advice that even someone such as I can understand. I am using a Palm T|X and Bonsai desktop 5 on Vista. I would be quite happy to keep this system forever, but sooner or later the handheld will die or maybe Palm Inc. will too. I have zero interest in Windows Mobile, and, from what I've read about its market share, I am not alone. In my version of a perfect world, Bonsai would run on an iPod Touch, but I've read in this Forum that that outcome is not likely to occur in the foreseeable future. I suppose that I could just sit here and continue to hope that my current system continues to work, but I would like to know what the pro-active folks are doing in terms of moving Bonsai to a non-Palm non-Microsoft handheld device and to a non-Palm desktop.

I have exactly the same question / problem, so I hope you get some response.
I am seriously considering moving to an iPod Touch or iPhone but have quite a few apps (Bonsai and Daynotez included) that I would like to continue using.

Currently, the closest to Bonsai (and with some importing abilities of exported desktop outlines) on the iPhone / iPod Touch is Carbonfin Outliner.

Bonsai Desktop has been available as a desktop only option (no specific device needed) for quite some time.

I'm still holding onto my Palm Tungsten C, watching this forum and waiting to see what direction Natara will go with Bonsai (and Daynotez, of course.) I see a lot of requests and suggestions -- Droid, Blackberry, Iphone? New Palm? I'd go with whichever one ends up supporting the Natara products (tho Iphone would be my least favored choice at this point, and Windows Mobile feels like I'd be going backwards.)

I love Bonsai on the desktop; I use it update of all my various project outlines. But after updating my outlines, I sync my ToDo/NextAction list to my Palm. That portability is huge. I've been trying to imagine using Bonsai on the desktop only. I could print out a Todo checklist easily enough, but it would be lacking notes -- massive loss of functionality. (I know I can print notes too, but then it would be a book instead of a checklist.)

So,I have to ask: do you guys have an idea which platform you will be developing? I don't really expect an answer to that (I'm sure we'll be the first to know once you've wrestled thru the decision )so I'll ask this also: What are the pros and cons, in your view?

From the comments on the forums several people have success running the Bonsai on the Palm Pre and using the new USB sync feature. I finally retired my Palm T3 and am using the Pre myself but am not using Bonsai on it, not having purchased the Classic app that's required for running old Palm apps. I'm using the Desktop only version for the time being, hoping Natara will release a Pre-specific version. I love my Pre and can't envision leaving to Windows Mobile.

Those of us who would love to use Bonsai on a Touch might want to tell Apple about that, perhaps it will motivate Apple to let it happen.

Hi,

I stayed with palm by using a Nokia N810 and Access Garnet VM.
http://www.access-co...m/products/gvm/

It also works on the new Nokia N900.

Its not so stable as a palm but it works perfect with bonsai, it syncs with the desktop via network sync (wifi)

Best,

Pedro

I've had an android G1 for a year, looking for something like bonsai as well. I think I found it: http://www.thinkingspace.net/ It's mind mapping, not outlining, but the concepts are similar. The developer has done an awesome job, and with the G1's keyboard, it's extremely powerful. I'm liking some things better than bonsai! Now I can finally retire the T/X and let it rest in peace... Today is a good day!

Thanks for a pointer. BTW, how large is your largest "mindmap" there? I mean, how powerful is it in terms of number of nodes per mindmap that don't make it dead slow?

I have ceased using Palm already but still use the desktop version of Bonsai in the hope that there would be an update in the near future. There have been several new features requested but nothing seems to happen. The last update was in Sept 2009 and not sure if there will be any new release in the near future.

Palm is dying and there is no point staying with a dying company.

I've left but still looking for a replacement for Bonsai, and haven't found a comparable product on android yet.

How I use Bonsai:
  • Flat file database
  • Outliner
  • Checklist at tradeshows
  • Library list of DVDs
  • My library of CDs
  • My library of books
  • Client list and their preferences

I need to be able to search, the large flat file databases I created.

I use the mind map tool thinking space but you can't search. So it takes longer to go through large maps then bonsai.

I haven't found a replacement for Bonsai yet so I'm carrying around my Palm Centro w/o the sim card just so I have access to my bonsai database.

I'm here to encourage Natara to move quicker to develop/migrate their products to other platforms and OSes. Android first please.

If you're moving to a Palm webOS device (a Pre or a Pixi), Outline Tracker may meet your needs. A migration guide and Bonsai export template is available on the migration page

Any plans to add "Sort" and "Search" functions to OT yet?
