Hi,
I have a Palm Tungsten C -- a "legacy" device -- and a new Dell with Windows Vista. Sigh. After many attempts over several months I was finally able to install my Palm device, and have Bonsai and Daynotez up and running on my desktop! I’m very happy to have them back. So far it's syncing, tho I'm still running Palm v 4.5.1P., I understand there is a 6.2 version and a program from Pimlico that may help if I start having problems.
Anyway, my question: could some helpful and generous person tell me where I would find the "native" palm data - ie, my address book, calendar etc - so I can do a backup? I found the Natara data files in my Documents folder, and the Bonsai config file in my programs folder, and I have those backed up.
I know several backup programs have been recommended (tealbackup, backup buddy) but I’d prefer not to introduce Vista to any more new programs just now. I’d like to keep new variables out of the equation until I find out how stable this setup is, so I just manually copied the Natara files, ie, drag & drop.
The only place I see Palm files is under C:\Program Files\Palm. I would go ahead and just copy this whole thing, except that I have added a bunch of new data to the desktop – today , june 25, and when I compare the “date modified” folder to the “date created” folder, they both read june 24 (ie, the date I installed it, which was yesterday.)
If these files folders are not modified, they must not contain the data I just entered – so where are the files I need to backup? I have searched all the likely places in my directory, my Tungsten C handbook and have tried to find the info on the palm site – no luck, so here I am. Thanks.
PS - I'll have to upgrade my device someday, but hope to holdout until Bonsai and Daynotez show up on new platforms.

Not exactly clear what you are looking for. Since I'm running HotSync Manager 7 (which is the only supported HotSync and Desktop under Vista) the locations of files are probalby different than if you installed one of the older releases.
For version 7, look in "Documents"\PalmOne\<hotsync user folder>\address (datebook, memopad, etc.) folder to find the .dat files.
For earlier versions it is similar except that instead of keeping the files in the "Documents" folder it is under "Program Files". So, C:\Program Files\Palm\<your hotsync user folder>\datebook... etc.
Vista has a "Rule" that applications should no longer put modifiable data in the "Program Files" folders. Hence, any "changing" data needs to be store either in the "Documents" folder, the AppData folders, or in other locations.
Also note that when data is modified in subfolders of a folder, the folder itself may not be updated with a modified date. If you are only looking a the the modified date of the folder "Palm", but data was changed in a subfolder, say Palm\<HotSync User>\address\, the "Palm" folder modified date doesn't necessarily get updated to match that of the "address" folder below it.

On additional tip, with the older version of Palm Desktop, you can configure the Palm Desktop's "Data directory" to be located somewhere other than under "C:\Program Files". To check and possibly reconfigure this setting, open Palm Desktop and select the Tools\Options menu. Under the General tab, examine the "Data directory" setting. Configuring this to be under your documents directory (i.e. \users\<username>\documents\Palm ) would be a good choice.

Hi -
Richard, I was able to reconfigure data directory per your instructions to suit vista's preference (altho my palm photos are still in the program file.) I was having a problem with links (Bonsai links to palm todo were not working, ie, I couldn't see them in the palm todo list) and it solved that also! Excellent, so far, except my back-2-bonsai has disappeared. I remember it's a separate install, and I don't see it in the zip file I downloaded. Where do I find it?
I still don't quite understand the date modify on the palm data. It seems to change only when I hotsync, which suggests that I don't have a backup on the palm desktop unless I hotsycn, which makes no sense to me. I'll try to figure it out some more.
Thanks.

Which file did you download? If you download the "Bonsai 4 Mobile for Palm OS - Bonsai 4 (PRC & PDF in a zip)" (Bonsai4SM.zip), you will find the Back2Bonsai.prc is included.

Which directory are you looking at? The one you configure the "Data directory" to be? If so, I would expect only HotSync to use these files. I am not sure where the Palm Desktop app stores its data.
