I'm bumping this to a new topic since it's annoying and I noticed a troubling secondary issue.

Quote

just noticed that the item categories aren't transferred to the mobile device. All the items show up as 'unfiled'. The categories themselves are listed in the global category list though. Changing the category on the handheld doesn't propagate back to the PC either.

The secondary issue that I just noticed today is that the keywords are being removed from the keyword list on the PC after sync'ing to the WM device. I had keywords set in two categories and both the categories and keywords are gone. The keywords in the items themselves are still there.

I have upgraded to the very newest version of bonsai (4.2.8.3054) on the WM device and I still get the error "Installation of MS SQL Server Compact 3.5 has failed. Retry?" when trying to upgrade the MS SQL components.

It's making it very difficult to get my GTD together! ;)

Have you been able to reproduce this, and if so, any idea on when there will be a fix? My GTD system isn't working the way things are and need to know if I should re-jig things again or wait.

Thanks!

John, sorry for the delay in responding. I was on vacation last week and am now trying to catch up on my work.
I tried creating a new outline, creating several items and assigning categories and keywords to them and all worked as expected (except for a Bonsai crash on the WM device while selecting keywords which I will investigate). The category and keyword changes propagated in both directions.
You can either send me your outline both from the desktop and the WM device for me to test with or you can enable diagnostic logging and send me your sync log. Email to support [at] natara.com or attach the log to a reply to this thread.
To capture the diagnostic sync log, please configure "logging during synchronization" to diagnostic on the View/Global Settings menu Synchronization tab in Bonsai on the PC. After running a sync with diagnostics enabled, access the log by clicking the "View Diagnostic Log" button in the Synchronization tab.

As for the MS SQL question, do you have DayNotez installed? Bonsai does not use the MS SQL software and should not require its installation. DayNotez uses SQL and could trigger this. I'll look into this SQL issue later. If the DayNotez UI is running, then I would ignore this for now as it seems the Updater is not properly detecting the installed SQL software.

I wasn't able to replicate the problem when creating a new outline from scratch and sync'ing it to the device: the categories appeared to transfer properly.

The only way I could get the categories and keywords to work in my main outline was to uncheck Synchronize on the outline and OK it to delete the outline from the device. Then, once it had sync'd and deleted the outline I re-enabled sync'ing and let it sync a fresh copy on to the device. Everything appears to be in sync and is staying in sync now. I guess this is similar to creating a new outline from scratch and sync'ing it over so that makes sense.

What I had done with my main outline was delete all my categories and keywords and replace them when new text and then systematically go through all the unchecked items in the outline and assign them one of the new categories. Only some of the items got new keywords. When I sync'd to the device after these changes I did notice that the original categories were still in the list on the device so perhaps there were just too many changes and it got confused. The old categories were added back into the list on the PC after the next sync too.

When I have a bit of time I'll try to replicate it again.

I do have Daynotez on my device but it's not usually running during the sync process. The 'wrong' version of sql doesn't seem to be harming it so I'll ignore it for now as you suggest.

Update: at some point since my last post the keywords have disappeared from the list on the PC again.

I had two categories (work and personal) in my main outline with a few keywords in each and both categories and all keywords are gone.

I don't know exactly what caused them to disappear, I had been doing updates on both the PC and WM device both connected and while disconnected.

Might this be related to the crash on the device that you mentioned earlier?

The crash on the WM device I referred to should not have caused a loss of keywords. I suggest configuring "logging during synchronization" to diagnostic on the View/Global Settings menu Synchronization tab in Bonsai on the PC. If you see it happen again, return to the Synchronization tab and click the view diagnostic log button. Reply and attach the log to this thread so I can examine.
