I already own Bonsai for Palm w/desktop, will the OTL's always continue to be compatible?

I bought the Palm version with Desktop support a long time ago, and still have it installed.

I am considering just buying the Beta WM version so I don't have to deal with the beta codes, can I assume that the OTL's will continue to port back and forth between the two?

I do NOT sync my WM device with my laptop, but I do want to be able to pass the OTL files back and forth from my palm device and it's desktop and occasionally view them on the WM5 device.

So, can I just buy the WM version without the desktop support and be able to use the same OTL files with the two handhelds?

Also, I would like to suggest that you provide an upgrade/discount plan for the longer term supporters of your products.

Thanks.

I'm not staff with Natara - just a user. But I doubt that anyone will promise you that forever it will be possible but it is currently the case. What you have to be careful about is the devices that you sync. Provided you copy across overwriting the Windows Mobile version I think you'll be OK. But you can wait for staff confirmation :) Meanwhile the Beta code will give an entirely free method of checking everything works OK for you.

Take a look at the options in the post announcing the availability of registration codes... You'll see there is a 50% discount in the price if you are simply adding the WinMobile availability to an existing Palm registration.

Wonderful! Thank you for the reply and the links, I think that nails it pretty well. I am going to dig up my old registration information and make sure my email address etc. is still the same and I'll likely order it tonight. Thanks again for the reply.

As Andrew indicated, that is correct. We plan on keeping the outline format compatible so you will be able to share outline files between the Windows Mobile and PC platforms. The only exception is future versions may change the outline file format (not currently planned) but we would still provide some way to import/export outlines to/from the Windows Mobile and PC if you do not sync your handheld.
Thanks Andrew for jumping in and answering! :)

I think there is also the question of if the Palm Bonsai v4 format will (ever) be updated if we make major changes to the other platforms.

For now, any changes to the Bonsai Desktop and it's outline file format will be compatible with (or updated to be so) both Bonsai Palm and Bonsai Windows Mobile products. This unfortunately limits what changes can be made to the Bonsai Desktop and Bonsai Windows Mobile product. At some point the Bonsai Palm product will need to be put into maintenance mode so advancements can be made on the other platforms. Exactly when that will happen is still to be determined. I foresee a major facelift for the Bonsai Desktop application for Bonsai v5 with little change to the handheld versions (at least for the initial release). This should allow us to release both a v5 Bonsai Palm and Bonsai WM product.
Of course, any reference to future Bonsai versions is all speculation and plans are subject to change. :D

I'm just joining the forum, but have been using Bonsai for over 4 years - first on a M500, then on a Treo 700p. The Bonsai Windows desktop is one of my always open apps. My organization is about to switch me to a Treo Pro with WinMobile. Can I simply install the Bonsai Win Beta on the Treo Pro, sync, and continue as usual, or do I need to re-install the desktop? As for features on the Beta I must say that my extensive outline editing I do on the desktop.

Thanks,
ToxJazz

I think you should install the full desktop version for Windows and add either current beta code or purchase a WinMobile registration code.

But the Windows Mobile version is still beta and there are some features that may not work for you that, as a Palm user, you've become accustomed to. We're promised a fuller featured Win Mobile version but, for now, I'm finding the beta release adequate.
