While editing Notes for an item (in Notes dialog, not details) changes are lost in some cases on Treo 680. For example, when I receive an SMS and choose to reply to it (hence switching to another application).

I have written a defect report about this issue and will have the Palm developer look into this.

Exact which app are you editing the note from? Are you using Bonsai or is this from the Tasks application?

Definitely from Bonsai; I never use links with Tasks.

Related bug: when I open item details and change Note field, searching with Palm built-in search results in note changes lost, and outline view reset from item details to list of items.

George has fixed the issue with lost note changes when using the Palm's built-in find command. Palm's built-in apps disables the find operation when in a modal dialog, (the item details is a modal dialog too). So the fix is for Bonsai to disable the find operation when in the item details. This will be in the next beta build.
As for the original issue with lost notes when replying to an SMS message, George said that the Notes view is protected by catching the App Stop event. If the 680 is not giving us that message when it bails to SMS then there is not much we can do.

How can we know for sure that this problem is inherent to the SMS application?

Try exiting to other applications from the same place in Bonsai and see if the results are the same as when following an SMS message.
