Folks,

I apologize for the constant forums downtime and slowness. Unfortunately, it is beyond our control at the moment. The forums (and our web site) exists on a "shared" system with other systems. The database access is also a "shared" resource, and if other web sites abuse it by making too many connections and then not freeing them up, we all suffer.

I am working on a temporary fix which involves a change in the database. In order to try to implement it (no guarantee it will work in the first place, but worth a shot) I will need to take down the forums for several hours. I am planning on doing this later tonight. Just a warning that access to the forum may be unavailable for several hours late tonight. If my testing "fails", I'll roll back to the current state. If it works, we should gain some speed and better search capabilities. Unfortunately, email notifications from the forums still will not be addressed.

(I am considering opening up a Natara Blog so that Richard, George, and I can post "News" and "Updates" information... and most folks today know how to add RSS feeds to their systems so that beta, upgrade, and new release information makes it into your RSS readers. I think that is a better solution overall than relying on the forums to inform you of new updates, but the forums is still a great place for user feedback and community).

I had intended on accomplishing this "test" earlier this weekend, but I ended up with a flooded basement and a broken sump pump. Monday, although not much of a "holiday" for most, we Presidents day and the kids had no school, so there was little "computer" time for dad.

Well, the conversion to the new database was not successful last night. I hope to do some further investigation. I've set up some test procedures that we can use so we don't have to offline the current db while we test. (Not that the current db doesn't do a good job of offlining itself anyway )

Great news. We finally got the system cut over to the new database. Hopefully the forums will be a lot more stable since we are no longer tied to the somewhat unforgiving / single-user based Access format. My fingers are crossed.
