Geroge,
1. The internal categories within an outline database does not follow an A-Z sort order (alphabetically) when created on the desktop but by order of entry? This seems not to be consistent with the handheld.
2. Scenario:
a. If Bonsai app and all its database were deleted on the handheld but left in the conduit, i.e. not archiving it first from the preference setting on the handheld and setting as default for the conduit not to synchronize. Reinstall Bonsai to the handheld. Set conduit to sync, the internal categories from the handheld outline database side named Business and Personal will overwrite whatever category the original outline database was renamed to.
b. Instead of having a user defined database internal categories of "Office",'Home" and "Field" originally established on the handheld before it's deletion, the conduit will sync back the outline with the default categories, in effect - "Business", "Personal" and "Field".
c. Is it because "Business" and "Personal" are the default categories for the Handheld outline database and since the outline is not present in the handheld, it cross-copies categories on both platforms?
d. Is it better for the outline not to have default categories (like in the desktop) but simply start all with "Unfiled"?
3. I think what JFranzen is refering to (which I also encountered)is this:
a. Create a new outline on the desktop.
b. Assign an internal category. The first category assigned is not shown in the edit category pop-up box, but remains blank and will become the default category for all succeeding branch or items irregardless of how many categories were added.
This somehow baffled me. I created a category named "Account" but did not show up in the pop-up box. Thought I did something wrong so I entered "Accounts" again for the second time. Exit and open database, now there are two categories named "Account"!
c. Bearing this scenario in mind, isn't it suppose to merge similarly named categories like in the handheld? (Which reminds me, it's the same scenario of not merging similar named categories with DNz- better write to Bryan)

Winston, thank for the clarifications.
1) The categories on the Palm are only sorted when displayed in the list. Internally, they are maintained by the Palm OS in the order they are entered. The desktop should be changed to also display them in alpha order.
2a) Did you create a blank outline with the same name? If so, then yes, the categories will overwrite the desktops. If you did not create a blank outline on the Palm, then all the categories from the desktop should be copied to the Palm.
2b) ?
2c) Yes, those are the default categories on both the Palm and the desktop. But it looks like the defaults is broken on the desktop.
2d) We were following the Palm standard set of default categories.
3) My eyes have been opened. With the default categories broken on the desktop, the setting of 1 uneditable category, normally "unfiled", causes the first category to be left out of the edit box.

Winston, thanks for the followup. I noticed it was the default categories and was coming back in today to make that clarification and you beat me to it...
