Bonsai WM beta sync support of non-touchscreen devices

Updated Nov 18 to provide updated information about the current Bonsai beta.
Background Information
Windows Mobile devices configured with two-tier security are not able to run ActiveSync service provider DLLs unless they are signed with a privileged certificate. While Natara signs all of the executables with its code signing certificate, this is not a Windows Mobile privileged certificate and therefore the Windows Mobile device does not recognize these as being signed. If a device is configured for two-tier security, and because the ActiveSync process on the device is running as a privileged process, it can only load DLLs that are also signed with a privileged certificate. Any unsigned DLLs will not load regardless of how security is configured for running unsigned applications. This means the current Bonsai beta will not be able to sync via the ActiveSync/WMDC framework.
Non-touchscreen devices (Windows Mobile Standard- previously called Smartphone devices) generally run in a two tier security model that limits what unsigned applications can do. In very strict security settings, unsigned apps cannot run. It is probably more common that security is configured so the device prompts before running an unsigned application. Therefore, I expect most users will be able to run the Bonsai application on the handheld. If you have a device that does not allow for running unsigned applications, you can probably find tools to "application unlock" your device, possibly even with the help of your service provider.
Now for the bad news. Even if your device allows unsigned applications to run, your device will not load the Bonsai ActiveSync component when a sync operation begins if the device is configured for two tier security.
With the current beta, the wizard used to install Bonsai to your device will detect if you device is configured for two-tier security. If it is configured this way, a dialog will be display explaining this. At this point you have two options:
Continue the install and a "sync on device connect" will run when the device is connected:
Bonsai will configure a process to run whenever your Windows Mobile device is connected. There are two drawbacks with this option. The sync only occurs when the device is connected. If you modify an outline with the device already connected, it will not be synced automatically like it would if the ActiveSync component was working. Second, during the "sync on device connect" the process will have limited ability to notify the Bonsai app on the handheld that a sync is beginning. Normally, the Bonsai app will save the outline being viewed if it is modified at the start of the sync and reload it once the sync is complete. This notification does not occur so instead the sync will attempt to make a RAPI call to close the Bonsai application. This may or may not work depending on device security. Since Bonsai auto-saves the outline periodically on the handheld, in most cases I would not expect Bonsai to have a modified unsaved outline opened when the device is connected. This may not be a big deal for most users but it is something to keep in mind.

Provision your device to use a one-tier security model:
Of course this does has security implications and it s entirely your decision whether you can and if you want to make this change. Keep in mind all of the WM Professional and Classic devices generally run in a one-tier security model. Natara will not be able to provide assistance in reconfiguring your device to use a one-tier security model as the tools available vary based on which device you own.

Needless to say, we plan to have a solution to this issue near or shortly after the time of the product release. We plan to have our ActiveSync DLL signed with a privileged certificate so it will load on devices using a two-tier security model.

Microsoft has a handy tool to examine the configuration of your device called Security Configuration Manager. While it can be used to provision your device (i.e. change the security settings), it will also update your certificate stores. I DO NOT recommend you use this tool to provision your device using the "built-in" profiles as you would not want the changes to the certificates that would be applied.

I keep getting an error message that Bonsai is not registered after I synchronize my new replacement Centro with my computer. My computer is using Bonsai desktop ver 5.0.3. Bonsai on my Palm Centro is ver 4.2.7 The registration numbers are different. If I try to make them the same, I get more error messages. If I put regist # from the computer onto the Centro it says it doesn't match my name (which btw I have never changed).
I'm wondering if anyone has a copy of FoxMulder's GTD 2.0 Template for Bonsai (I have the desktop sync version). I posted a request for it on his PalmOrganized.com website a few days ago but he seems to be out right now and I'd like to get a copy to start GTDing right now. If you know of a site on the Internet I could download it, I'd be most appreciative. Otherwise if a site does not exist please email it to me. To email me a copy please input the following email address into your email program:

1) first start with the proper name 'David' and then add a dot after it
2) then add the proper name 'Alan' and then add a dot after it
3) then add the proper name 'Hart' and then add the at sign after it
4) then add the name 'gmail' then add a dot
5) finally add com to the end.

Hi All:

I'm running bonsai on my laptop, as well as having a copy on my USB thumb drive. I'd like to keep my Projects outline on my thumb drive to update at work, while keeping a version on my laptop as well as my palm. I can synchronize USB <-> laptop well enough, and I can synchronize Laptop <-> palm just fine. However, it seems that having the thumb drive plugged in when I sync Laptop <-> Palm doesn't update the Palm. Am I doing something wrong here?

Bonsai V.5 Rendered Unusable Due To "Find" Function

I just upgraded to Bonsai v.5. The "find" function searches for the string "one character at a time" and has rendered Bonsai v.5 essentially unusable to me.

I have a huge outline that is carefully organized with appropriate branches expanded and closed depending on what I'm working with. The new "find" function expands trees as each character of the search string is input. By the time the entire string is entered, yes, it has found the final string as a whole, but I may have multiple trees expanded that were previously closed. Use the "find" function a few times and my whole outline is a mess and I have to go back and close all the branches except the ones I had opened. Annoying and, what's worse, unnecessary.

I'm a huge Bonsai fan but you guys really made a boo-boo here if there is no option to have it NOT search "one character at a time" and instead just find the "whole string" once entered.

Is there? If not, how do I "downgrade" back to v.4?

Palm Pre -- Bonsai Performace?

Is Palm Pre much better in terms of Bonsai performance run on Classic, compared to PalmOS devices?

Has anyone tried large outlines on Pre, or other tasks where Bonsai is not very fast on PalmOS?
Does it really work two times faster as MotionApps promises universally?

I am considering Palm Pre as a replacement for my old PalmOS device--but as long as there's no promise for native WebOS port of Bonsai, only performance improvement can be a factor in favor of Pre over "buy just another Treo PalmOS device".

Bonsai Winmobile: Estimated Date For Performance And Stability?

As Beta announcement of Bonsai for WinMobile reads, the product is still early beta in terms of both stability and performance--especially warning heavy users like myself that (a) performance maybe become an issue with several-thousands-of-items outlines, and (B) corruptions still may occur from time to time.

Three questions:
1) If we compare Bonsai performance on a latest PalmOS device with an average WinMobile device, how seriously is WinMobile version is slower? (I would be happy if you had data specifically for PalmOS Treo 680 VS a 528MHz-Qualcomm CPU-powered WinMobile HTC--but I hope that any other pair would give an idea for performance comparison)

2) If WinMobile is slower these days--how serious do you plan to improve its performance by the time WinMobile Bonsai goes out of Beta?

3) Can you give an idea of date when WinMobile can be released out of Beta? Is it more like in 3 months or in a year from now?

Thanks a lot, and have a great 2010!

I picked my most-used icons and made a bunch of keywords named after what the image looks like, "Printer," "Smiley," "Clock," etc. Assigning one of these "keywords" is essentially the same as assigning a custom icon (like you can do in DateBk6, Agendus, etc).

Please... I miss having Bonsai on my handheld, and running it via Classic is a hassle and misses out on the WebOS-specific interface improvements. WebOS is a great platform, very actively supported and continually enhanced by Palm, and it already has two devices using it. While the Pre and Pixi have so far been exclusive to Sprint in the US, they are about to be released by other carriers too including Verizon.

I hope you guys haven't given up on Palm. They were misguided and allowed their platform to languish for quite a while, but I know I'm not alone in having my love for Palm renewed by WebOS. Come join the party!

Future Of Bonsai Desktop

I'm wondering what the future holds for Bonsai Desktop. To be blunt, I love this software and consider it tops in its category. However, it seems the development has stopped. I have left this software probably 5 times and have returned every single time! It's simple and powerful and full of features. I know you guys don't like to announce your plans (not sure why?), but I hope I'm not alone in encouraging you to take this software to the next level.
The desktop software is really really good, but could use some additional features and some visual upgrades.
I'm not sure where the handheld market is going. I still use my Treo 700P even with some of its limitations. Windows mobile seems stuck in the mud. Seems google android, Apple Iphone, or Blackberry are the most popular. I know there are many Bonsai handheld users who are wanting to upgrade their hardware, but want Bonsai to go with them.

Hope all is well with you guys. I appreciate your software. Hope you continue to develop it or pass it on to someone who will. My intent is not to criticize, but to motivate. Thanks for listening to this one "power user's" opinion.

I wonder what application you chosen (or considered) as a replacement to Bonsai on your non-PalmOS device (i.e. Blackberry / iPhone / Symbian / Android)?

What application proved the best GTD application for your needs?
And what app has replaced the outliner functionality since you had to leave Bonsai?

How happy you are with the replacement(s)? (I realize that the really happy users are not watching Bonsai forums any more :-) -- but nonetheless).

(by best GTD application I mean that it's quite realistic that someone used Bonsai for GTD for a long time, but found something that is not an outliner but does the GTD job pretty well. Like Things for Mac, for example--which is hardly a serious outliner--but really popular for GTD. However, personally I'm interested in something with Windows desktop app bundled with a smartphone software)

After transitioning to a Treo 800w from a 755p, I've felt handicapped in my task management until I found Bonsai.

I understand you are still working on the Links feature, by which I understand you can transfer items from a Bonsai outline to a to-do list, with assorted alarms and such available. Is this correct? Any estimate on when available?

Second, I'm interested in understanding how it will work. I use Notes Traveler (corporate standard) on my 800w, so instead of Outlook syncing with my phone, Traveler syncs with the same phone databases. Should the link feature work with my setup? I presume so, since as long as the feature gets onto the phone, it will propagate via the Traveler link (outside of ActiveSync) to my desktop Notes program.

I really like Bonsai on my 800w so far - it is great for having anywhere to refine plans or capture tasks to complete in an orderly, hierarchial manner.

Better Way To Get Existing Outlines In Styletap For Symbian?

The Treo 680 finally had to go, and I went for an Nokia N97 (with Symbian S60 5th edition OS).

I haven't tried all the features but Bonsai 4.0.3 seems to work in Styletap (Palm emulator) on the N97 and I can create new outlines.

However, Styletap doesn't support syncing and it took me a while to figure out how to open my existing outlines.
1. Using FileZ on Treo, copy all files with creator N0tl to SD card.
2. N97 uses Micro SD card, so transfer from Palm SD to N97 via PC
3. Find outline pdbs via File Manager and open them one by one to get them in Styletap
4. Use FileZ in Styletap on N97 to delete BonsaiOutlines from internal storage <- I've since figured out that this step was only necessary, because the outline PDBs weren't installed before I ran Bonsai for the first time.
5. Open Bonsai in Styletap and my outlines are there.

However, this means I should:
a. only use Bonsai on my phone from now on, or
b. manually duplicate what I change on my phone on the PC or
c. only change outlines on my PC and have to keep my Treo to sync then repeat above to overwrite what's on the phone.

I asked StyleTap if there's any chance of them implementing Hotsync, despite it being a lot of work. Their awesome support said Hotsyncing is a fairly high priority item on their to-do list. They hope to have it done sometime in the first half of this year.

Meanwhile can anyone think of other options or anyone figured out a better way?

Thanks and happy new year!

Can'T Read/Can'T Delete A File

Greetings,

I have a problem that started on the Palm TX, but now seems to be a problem on the handheld as well as desktop and syncing. I had a file on my Palm TX that I could not opened or delete. Trying to either open or delete would has no affect at all. I have tried to delete from the desktop and sync with "desktop overwrites handheld" with no success. At the first sync, the sync log give the error that "file cannot be opened on handheld". Second time, with sync still set to "desktop overwrites handheld", I got the message that the file cannot be found at C:\... where the file was located. I have tried to delete the file from the within Bonsai Desktop as well as from the directory where the file is located. I was able to rename the file on the desktop and sync with "desktop overwrites handheld" so now I can open the renamed file with no loss of data, but I cannot get rid of the file on the Palm TX or on the desktop. Each sync returns the file to the desktop with a yellow warning triangle.

You support is appreciated.

Regards,

When Add Sibling, Rest Of Outline Goes Blank

When I add a sibling either thru the menu or hitting the return key, the rest of the outline goes blank until I do something else, like open the keyboard or close and open the keyboard or close the file and reopen. (I have 5.03.3308 and a Samsung Omnia; I also will share that the update program says the install failed in going from 5.01 to 5.03, but 5.03 works).

Decimal Numbers In Custom Field

I'm using the current versions of Bonsai on my PC (Windows 7) and on the HTC Touch Diamond (Windows Mobile 6.1). Both operating systems are the German ones, where a comma defines the decimal point. This causes the following issues:

(1) Desktop: Input numbers in a numeric customs field
The input can be done as "123,45" or as "123.45". Apart of the format of the input (with comma or point as decimal point), it will be displayed as "123.45". This might be acceptable, but on the mobile device the value appears without a decimal point as "12345".

(2) Mobile: Input numbers in a numeric customs field
The initial value of the field is displayed as "0,00".
Entering a value by increasing / decreasing with the arrow-buttons (left/right) will cause, that the value is display with a comma as decimal point "123,45".
Input a value by typing "123.45" will result in a value without a decimal point "12345".
Input a value with a comma as decimal point the comma is not accepted during input.
After a synchronisation, the decimals are cut off - on the desktop as well on the mobile.

At this stage of the software it's not posible to work with decimal numbers. Please asure, that in one of the next releases this will supported properly.
